On the Sound Production by Vortex Whistles

Abstract : ome first measurements (section 2) agree with earlierfindings that the frequency of the produced sound increaseslinearly with the velocity of the flow into the whistle, andidentifies by directivity and acoustic power measurementsthe sound source to be of the dipole type. Consideringthe balance equation of the angular momentum in the flow,theory is developed for predicting the generated frequency(section 3). It is shown that the interior friction is of im-portance here. PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) togetherwith hot wire anemometers and microphones/hydrophonesare used to study the flow close to the exit opening (sec-tions 4 and 5). The oscillatory velocities in the exit planeare used to predict the radiated sound pressure levels.
