Jouer avec la gravité : approche sociologique plurielle de l'engagement dans des sports dangereux

Abstract : The involvement in "gravity sports" (mountain climbing, rock climbing, parachuting and bungee jumping) implies the acceptance of well-known physical risks. This paper focuses on the motivations and social factors that lead to such an acceptance of dangers, in a sociological perspective. Through a moderate constructivist approach, we intend to articulate theoretical views in order to develop a non reductionnist framework (in the sense of Jean-Michel Berthelot) of such physical engagement. Explanatory plurality emerges of the detailed interviews that have been carried out with participants in such activities. This plurality actually has three facets: intra-individual (stressing intrinsic individual motives), inter-individual (pointing social motives and interactions between participants), and exo-individual (underlining normative, institutional and/or ideological forces)
